A press conference was organized by Dost Welfare Foundation, Peshawar Co-Secretariat PFDP, and The Pakistan Forum for Democratic Policing, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter with support of Rozan Pakistan and other members.
The forum presents their charter of demands for Police reforms in the province. The forum urged the Provincial government and the concerned authorities to take necessary measures for the implementation of KP Police ACT 2017and the recommendations of the Federal and Provincial Ombudsmen report on: good administration standards for Police stations-2016.
While addressing the press conference, the Program Officer Rozan, Muhammad Ali, flanked by Aizaz Khan of Dost Welfare Foundation and other representatives of KP Civil Society network praised the initiatives of provincial government to improve the performance of Police department for the last five years.
He further added, compliance with public demands for reforms in the Police department is inevitable for making “Police for the people” rather than a “Police for the government” which is democratically controlled, politically neutral and professional.
The forum presented a charter of demands with a focus on eliminating undue police interference in Police and make transparent and standard procedures for recruitment, promotions and transfers.
It was further demanded that women participation should be increased in the department and eight hours shift system should be implemented at Police station level as per labor laws. The participants stressed the need for the training of Police personnel on laws protecting rights of women, children, transgender persons with disabilities and minorities.
The forum urged the government to increase budget allocations for police investigation and training and provide medical, educational and welfare facilities to Police personnel and their families.
