PESHAWAR: Former national team member and Senior AFC C License Coach Muhammad Asad Ullah Khan Saturday said that the role of quality football coach is vital for promoting the game in Pakistan.
He said this during his lecture in the 5-day long Pakistan Sports Board Coaching and Training Course being continued at PSB Coaching Center on Saturday. Pakistan Origin US National Dr. Nabil, DG PSB (Technical) Shahid Hameed, international course conductor Rana Nasrullah, international gold medal athlete Muhammad Asad, and more than 80 male and female coaches from all across the province were also present.
About a good coach, Muhammad Asad Ullah, who represented Pakistan for seven years at the international level besides being coach of the U13, U16 teams that won gold medal in Korea, said that he or she should be positive, enthusiastic, supportive, trusting, focused, goal-oriented, knowledgeable, observant, respectful, patient and a clear communicator.
Muhammad Asad Ullah, who is associated with coaching in Pakistan Sports Board from the last 13-years, said that the coaching philosophy is different in Pakistan. He said coaches could get less support in terms of financial condition rather than hiring international coaches on huge money. He said having an understanding of coaching philosophy, whether it’s inspired by others or part of your own why, by designing good sessions for training.
He should think before any act, provide or generate equal opportunities for the athletes, besides keeping a positive communication by involving all in equal terms. He also questioned the difference between a good coach and a great coach.
A great coach knows how to uncover entrenched behaviors to unblock people’s potential. They focus on values, needs, strengths and beliefs with empathy, attention, and patience. A good coach is the ability to see people as part of a system, he added.
He said a skillful coach doesn’t enforce changes – a coach gives their client the confidence to make their own changes and find their own solutions by accessing the qualities that are already inside them.
When one thinks about it, coaches have a lot of responsibilities from organizing training, developing game plans, communicating with players, and much more. When it comes down to it though, successful coaches share some crucial common attributes which set them apart from the rest.
He said mostly coaches tend to focus on the tactical or strategic aspects of what makes coaches great. But consider this, according to inspirational speaker Tony Robbins, only 20% of an individual’s success is due to strategies and tactics.
In fact, he said, 80% of an individual’s success is determined by their psychology. As a coach, having the right attitude and mindset is essential for inspiring players, developing the team, and creating a winning culture.
There are more qualities of successful football coaches that you can incorporate immediately to develop a winning psychology within your organization. What’s more these qualities are not only applicable to coaching football, they are cornerstones for success in other sports, business, and more, he said.
“When a coach embodies these traits, it has a cumulative effect by rubbing off on those around them as players tend to emulate the characteristics of their leader,” he further added. So let’s jump in and see how you can get started developing an atmosphere that breeds success.
